A heavy-duty tote is the most versatile everyday outdoor bag — it swallows wet swimsuits, gear, groceries, and firewood, and its reinforced bottom takes a beating. For trips and water, a waterproof duffel is the better pick. Many people keep a tote in the trunk and a duffel for travel.
A duffel with a sealed roll-top or waterproof-zip closure keeps gear dry through rain, splashes, and a wet boat or kayak deck — not full submersion unless it's specifically rated for it. It's ideal for paddling, boating, and anything that can't get wet.
Empty and air it out after wet or dirty trips, brush off mud once dry, and spot-clean rather than machine-washing. For waxed canvas, re-apply wax occasionally to keep it water-repellent. Store it dry and loosely packed so the material doesn't crease or mildew.
